So you decided you want to renovate or remodel your bathroom. That’s great! But do you know what you need to do first? Who do you need to consult with? Redoing a bathroom is by no means a small project, so you need to prepare accordingly. We know it can be overwhelming, so, to help you get started, we’ve gathered some tips from experts in the field:
Figure Out The Functions
The first thing to do before getting started with the planning is to figure out exactly how you use your bathroom on a regular basis. Do you and your partner need two sinks? Do you want to install a big bathtub? Do you need a wall niche to place shampoo bottles in? How much do you want to spend on the entire project? There are many questions that need to be answered before anything else. Once you’ve got all the answers, you can begin the planning process.
Choose Your Type
Just like any other room, there are many different ways to design and set up a bathroom. It’s most likely that you won’t be changing what type of bathroom you have when remodeling, but it’s still a good idea to take a look at all the options before finalizing your plans. Think about consulting with an interior designer to see how you can make the best of the space you have. You might be missing something they’ll spot that will help you in the long run. For example, a cramped bathroom can be converted into a luxurious master bath by borrowing some room from a nearby bedroom or walk-in closet. Instead of having a half-bath, you’ll be able to have a full bathroom.
Come Up With A Layout
Once you’ve settled on the type of bathroom you want, it’s time to come up with a concrete plan. Naturally, there are countless possibilities for bathroom layouts depending on how the room is built. Don’t get ahead of yourself, though. Don’t think about the design just yet. You can do so after you’ve nailed down the layout you’ll be going for.
Lighting Matters
A lot of people tend to forget about lighting when it comes to bathroom remodeling. You’ll immediately notice bad lighting in a bathroom – it completely destroys the look of the room, no matter how well the rest of it is designed. You need to figure out how much natural lighting you get in the room. Of course, natural lighting is the best since it makes a room feel brighter and airier. However, you still need to think of artificial lighting for times the sun is not out. Overhead light can cast shadows on the face which we don’t want. Think of layering – maybe LEDs that can be dimmed or soft lighting at head level at the vanity. It’s best to avoid harsh light sources and bare bulbs.
Ventilation
One crucial point of the bathroom is the ventilation, of course. Seeing as bathrooms are prone to dampness, it requires great ventilation. Think of windows, window vents, or exhaust fans. It’s up to you to figure out what’s best for you and your needs.
Extra Touch
If you want to go the extra mile and make your bathroom a little more luxurious, consider adding some luxurious touches. Maybe a heated floor? A heated towel rail? Or a deep soaking tub? There are many more ways to make a bathroom feel luxurious. It’s the fun part of the project that you get to choose!
