She froze
Emily remained very still during the entire conversation. Should she go ahead and enter the room in the vain hope that her mother won’t say anything, or should she remain inside in the hope that her mother won’t say anything? She was well aware of her mother’s inability to keep a secret, especially if it concerned her or if it was about something she was clueless about.
Despite this knowledge, she decided to enter the competition. She escaped her father’s finding, and all she could do was cross her fingers and hope for the best. She had avoided her father’s discovery there.
Opening the door
She opened the door slowly and deliberately to avoid making a sound. Her father had just pulled up to the building where he worked, gotten out of his car, and begun walking toward the front door at the same time. The only thing standing between them was a simple fence, and one could hear a faint breaking sound coming from the direction of the fence off in the distance.
She paused only long enough to observe and listen as her father unlocked the front door before sprinting towards the interior of the house herself. Before making her move, she waited for her father to finish opening the door.
