Holding her breath
Abby held her breath as she watched her father enter the home from the shed. Abby’s father had been outside in the shed. Abby’s father had been in the shed the entire time. She could hear a creaking sound as he made his way up the steps, and her heart beat faster as he got closer. As he moved further, the cracking of the steps became louder. The creaking ceased when he reached the top of the structure.

He could hear a cracking sound every time he climbed or descended the stairs. It wasn’t until later that it was revealed that he had been standing in her chamber without moving for quite some time.
Pretending to sleep
Abby put on a show of sleeping by covering her eyes and acting as though she was asleep. She made an attempt to keep as motionless as she could while she pretended to be asleep. She sensed the warmth of his breath on her cheek as he peered over the side of her face to check to see if she was truly sleeping while he was checking to see if she was sleeping.
Pretending to sleep
While he was doing so, he looked over to see if she was asleep. He got away from the trouble and went to sleep in his room. To protect his privacy, he did this.
