Following breakfast, each person went their separate ways to prepare for court. Ava’s new clothing had been purchased by Miss Smith, who was pleased to see her wearing it. Ava grinned and acted as if she was just as delighted as they were, but she actually felt differently. She was terrified.

They went to the courtroom and followed all the customary steps. As they made their way down the hallway, Ava’s heart was thumping in her chest. It would be today that she once more legally belonged to a family. Yet, rather than being delighted, her stomach churned at the prospect.
